Chiltern Distribution cuts CO2 emissions with Webfleet

Chiltern Distribution Ltd has seen a 1.5% improvement in miles per gallon (MPG) alongside a 2% reduction in fuel consumption, thanks to an integrated fleet management solution from Webfleet, Bridgestone’s globally trusted fleet management solution.

The cold chain logistics specialist, which offers transport solutions for frozen, chilled, ambient and pharmaceutical distribution, has installed Webfleet across its fleet of 55 HGVs as part of an ongoing drive to cut CO2 emissions.

“Integrating Webfleet with our incumbent transport planning system has been simple and seamless, helping us cut fuel consumption and CO2 by allocating the nearest driver to jobs, avoiding traffic and following eco-friendly routes,” said Andy Gibson, Fleet Manager at Chiltern Distribution.

“But the real difference has been Webfleet’s OptiDrive 360 driver monitoring. We can access live views and detailed reports on all our drivers, with clear, color-coded grading highlighting those who might need extra training to address harsh braking, speeding or idling.

“We can customise the scoring and set up different profiles for drivers to level the playing field for those focused on less fuel-efficient routes, like inner-city areas.”

Chiltern Distribution Managing Director, Brian Sagaseta, added: “Our fleet covers more than 87,000 miles each year, so the 1.5% MPG improvement translates to significant CO2 savings. As well as giving us powerful insights into our mileage efficiency, the software also provides an at-a-glance overview of where all our assets are at any given moment.”

The Webfleet platform is also helping Chiltern Distribution meet the latest DVS 2024 Progressive Safe System (PSS) requirements. The integration of a 360° camera system from Fastview360 offers comprehensive front, side, and reversing coverage, granting instant access to live footage via the Webfleet platform.

Additionally, Webfleet’s remote tachograph download feature provides live status updates on drivers’ hours, enhancing compliance and enabling more accurate ETA estimates by factoring in required breaks. This automated daily download capability maximises truck availability, keeping vehicles on the road longer.

Chiltern Distribution is committed to several other eco-initiatives, including energy-efficient eco tyres, Euro 6 trucks and aerodynamic Volvo FH Aeros. ThermoKing A400 advanced temperature control technology is being used to cut refrigeration CO2 emissions, while solar panels are being trialled on some vehicles as a backup energy source.

Looking ahead, Chiltern Distribution plans to further integrate Webfleet’s advanced solutions into its operations to enhance safety, compliance and sustainability.

Upcoming initiatives include the introduction of a Webfleet TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), electronic performance monitoring to comply with updated DVS safety regulations and Webfleet Cold Chain for real-time monitoring and control of temperature conditions across refrigerated assets.

Beverley Wise, Webfleet UKI Regional Director for Bridgestone Mobility Solutions, praised Chiltern Distribution’s proactive approach.

“Chiltern Distribution’s integration of Webfleet showcases how advanced telematics can drive significant improvements in sustainability and operational efficiency,” she said. “Its commitment to decarbonisation and driver engagement sets a strong example for the industry.”
